Marines fire mortars
SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN – U.S. Marines fired mortars into the desert Thursday night after detecting what a spokesman called "a credible threat" around their desert base southwest of Taliban-held Kandahar.

White House refuses Omar deal
WASHINGTON – Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday the United States would not stand for any arrangement that allowed Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar to remain free and "live in dignity" in the region.
