American businesses try to recover from terrorist attack

Dow ends up 114; Nasdaq slips 3
NEW YORK — Investors seeking safer havens bought up blue chips Thursday but sold off riskier, technology shares amid worries about how long and how much the slumping economy will suffer from the terrorist attacks.

President Bush sought to coax Americans back onto airplanes Thursday by putting the federal government in charge of airport security and pledging $500 million to upgrade security features on airplanes in hopes of thwarting future hijackings.
