Taliban's rise to power

1994: Formed by Islamic students belonging to the Pashtun ethnic group; today led by former guerrilla Mohammad Omar
Wins popularity as it stamps out corruption, restores peace and opens trade routes.

1996: Supported by Osama bin Laden's money and military advisors, Taliban seizes Kabula and takes control of government.
Rule only recognized by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab emerites.

2001: Controls 90% of Afghanistan; many supporters in Pakistan.

Taliban's rule:
• The Taliban has imposed the strictest form of Islam
• Introduced public executions and amputations
• Banned women from education and forced them to cover faces
• Banned television and music
